Stewartville Area Little Pantry Program

Laurie Helmers, vocalist and narrator, and Carol Engel, pianist, present a musical and narrated walk through nearly 3 centuries of history with songs that have become affiliated with fields of service for veterans starting with America's War of Independence. The program will end with a tribute to all veterans in a medley of the U.S. Armed Forces official songs.

You'll learn things like why is there "macaroni" in the song Yankee Doodle?  Was the song "When Johnny Come Marching Home" about the North or the South? Who was called the King of the Military March?  What musician is credited with swelling the ranks of volunteer enlistments in WWI? What two songs -- one in German and one in English -- conveyed the exact same sentiment during WWII?  How did a famous American actress affect the Korean Conflict? What did John Wayne have to do with "Tie a Yellow a Ribbon" in the Viet Nam War?
